Cartoon Physics started life as a project of Peter Ayscough and Sam Magriplis of Brisbane Australia in 2008. Pete and Sam have been collaborating since the mid 90’s when they played together in Edie’s Playpen - also from Brisbane. Edie's performed a handful of small shows and made some studio recordings. Following the inevitable split, Sam joined the moderately successful Mocking Room, while Pete regressed to his home studio to continue writing. Sam eventually moved to Melbourne and remained there ‘till late 2007 when he returned to Brisbane. In 2008 he and Pete began a new musical collaboration: Cartoon Physics. The pair started started developing new material with guitars and vocals augmented with computer-sequenced bass, drums and other instruments. In September 2008, cartoon physics released their debut cd - "The Blind Fingers EP", containing 4 studio-produced originals. A month later they performed their first live show. They spent the next 8 months working on an album-length follow-up to the EP. This new album was christened per ardua ad astra and released on June 7, 2009. Following the recording of per ardua ad astra, Pete and Sam enlisted the help of ex Edies Playpen bass player; Ted Patterson to begin working on material for their next project; a mainly acoustic EP. In late October they travelled to Ted's house in rural Kenilworth to record the bulk of the material over a long weekend. In January 2010, Mark Whitmore joined cartoon physics and, with the assistance of Mark on bass and his daughter; Sarah on Cello, final overdubs were completed. The Kenilworth Sessions was released on April 7, 2010. Following this the band's ranks swelled once again with the addition of Simon Thomas on drums. In May Mark left and following some tryouts, Jim Fleming joined as the bands new bass-player. The transition from 2-person project to full band complete, cartoon physics started looking for live work. Their first show was at Alloneword in The Valley; Brisbane on September 26, 2010. The guys are currently developing material for their next full-length release and playing shows around Brisbane. |
