January 25, 2010: overdubs completed
The final recording sessions for cp's upcoming EP took place in the blue room over the weekend. The sessions involved Mark putting down bass tracks for two of the songs, and Mark's daughter; Sarah playing some gorgeous cello parts. Many hours of mixing still lie ahead, though hopefully the end target (a completed EP) is now within sight.
December 24, 2009: new band member
CP's ranks have swelled with the permanent addition of Mark Whitmore on bass guitar. Mark is a local Brisbane lad with experience in a number of Brisbane bands. Mark's initial task will be to lay down some overdubs on a couple of the songs recorded in Kenilworth in October. Those sessions are slated to occur in late January. Mark's addition brings the band a step closer to fulfilling their ambition of performing more frequent live shows.
November 08, 2009: video clip posted
Various bits of footage taken during the Kenilworth sessions have been cobbled together into CPs very first video clip! The song is a cover of Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood". The clip also contains footage from the 1927 flood of the Mississippi River, courtesy of the US Signal Corps. It is viewable now on You Tube, or just watch it on this site on the Media Page.
November 01, 2009: recording completed, photos posted
CP have just completed a four-day recording session at Chateau Patterson in Kenilworth on the Sunshine Coast. Six songs have been recorded and several weeks of mixing now lie ahead. A number of photos from the sessions have been posted on the About page.
October 02, 2009: new demos posted
We have posted four new mp3 files on the media page for your listening pleasure. These are demos - and thus do not meet the rigorous performance / production standards usually applied to CP recordings, They are posted for the interest of anyone dedicated enough to want to know about the process CP songs go through from gestation to final delivery. According to that metaphor, these songs might be considered healthy, well-formed embryos. The songs should also provide an indication of the flavour and direction of CPs next release. They are; Shine, And You And Me, Four Stroke Cycle Petrol Engine and One Million Mad Monkeys and will all be included in upcoming recording sessions planned for late October. Stay tuned Physicists.
August 19, 2009: cartoonphysics.net v2.0
Today the files for our new-look website were uploaded to the interweb. The new site has some enhanced functionality, has the various annoying niggly bugs fixed, and mostly looks a lot better. Have a click around and take in some of the pages. If you find anything that doesn't work, or if you have any suggestions please let us know. Also, any contributions in the way of articles or art will be gratefully accepted.
July 23, 2009: per ardua ad astra on iTunes
Well, yes it has been a slow news week, but that doesn't lessen the significance of Per Ardua Ad Astra's arrival on the iTunes music store. Download it, rate it, review it, iMix it - go iCrazy! Here's the link.
July 15, 2009: guest member for next project
Ted Patterson has emerged from the bush in Kenilworth to join Pete and Sam in the next CP project. Ted was the bass player in edie's playpen and will be contributing bass, and basically whatever he feels like to the next cartoon physics recordings. Ted other contribution is his stylophone, which the guys are still trying to figure out what to do with. Pre-production activities are now well under way with a number of demos completed. The material for the next project is mostly brand new and will see the band take some interesting and dare we say, vigorous new directions. We will be posting some of the demos on the media page as the material continues to develop.
July 07, 2009: debut album release!
Cartoon physics' debut album; per ardua ad astra was officially released today. The album was recorded from September 2008 to May 2009 at the blue room, Brisbane. It contains 11 songs, all originals, and was produced by cartoon physics with mixing and mastering by Pete. Intrepid visitors can purchase the album here, while more cautious visitors may wish to first preview the album on our media page here (before going on to purchase it). This album has been an incredible journey for us. We hope you love it.

May 24, 2009: mixed and mastered
The final mixdown and mastering process for per ardua ad astra is now complete. The songs now exist in the final versions as they will appear on the cd. We have uploaded all the songs in the correct final running order to the media page, where you can listen to them individually, or you can click the play whole album link to have the album streamed in its entirety. Unfortunately Sam has contracted a very nasty case of pneumonia. Once he has recovered, the few tasks required to finalise this epic project will be able to be completed and the cd will be released. So be sure and send some psychic healing vibrations in Sam's direction.
May 10, 2009: per ardua ad astra
Planning for the forthcoming debut album takes another step forward with the finalisation of cover artwork and a title. The title is per ardua ad astra which, as well as being the motto of a number of organisations around the world, was also Buck Rodger's motto and was displayed prominently on the side of his spaceship; The Searcher. Per ardua ad astra translates from Latin, into something like; Through difficulties, to the stars, which seemed appropriate given the trials and tribulations that have had to be overcome to complete this album. The photograph on the front cover was staged and taken by Phoebe Ayscough. You can click the image to the left for a larger, better view.
March 9, 2009: mishap, rehabilitation and an apocalyptic new track
Nine days before Christmas we bravely predicted an April or May release for the album, based on having a "trouble-free" run. We should never make predictions. Within the couple of weeks after making that statement Sam's arm was in a cast following a nasty fall from his bike, and Mac was undergoing major surgery which ended up putting him out of action for 6 weeks! Both patients have now recovered and CP has re-convened to complete another recording. Nuclear Autumn was uploaded to the site today. This is a different sort of adventure for CP, a very short, and quite heavy "almost-instrumental" piece that, to our ears brings to mind some of Radiohead's stuff. Enjoy!
February 6, 2009: death truck safari
If you've never experienced the joy that is the extreme 4X4 off-road challenge, now is the time to address that sad omission in your life. Australian Images have just released 2 DVDs: "Toperi Challenge 2008" and "Willowglen Challenge 2008" which feature 4WD trucks destroying themselves in various otherwise tranquil, rural NSW settings. The soundrack to both these DVDs features songs from CP, Mocking Room and Edies Playpen along with a bunch of other equally low profile Oz music people. Get hold of your own copy from Australian Images.
December 16, 2008: juan circled & album
Progress continues toward the forthcoming CP album with Juan Circled finally mixed down and uploaded. This song has been part of CP's set for some time and P & S believe this recording captures the melodic structure and melancholy feel of the song well. Planning for the album is now at a fairly advanced point, with a tentative title, track listing and artwork concept. One of Brisbane's most promising young visual artists is also on-board to create images for the package, which we will preview on this site. Release currently looks like being somewhere around April or May 2009, depending on how trouble-free the remaining recording sessions turn out to be. As you may know, most new recordings are uploaded to this site as they are completed, but some people have reported difficulty getting the songs to open in their media player. If you are one of these people you may like to check out CP's page on last.fm. Last.fm is an English music networking site that contains all CP studio recordings. Joining last.fm will also give you the dubious benefit of hearing other bands that are considered stylistically similar to CP.
October 8, 2008: cartoon physics legitimised!
If you're Australian and were born before 2000 you might remember the late great Big Kev. Big Kev was a minor TV celeb who was famous for his lurid Aussie shirts, and for his catchphrase: "I'm Excited!!!" Well Kev ... big fella, we here at cartoonphysics.net can relate because - like you - we now are also excited ... by the news that the blind fingers ep is now downloadable from the ubiquitous iTunes. In a strange way we feel this bonding with the online retail giant has somehow legitimised us ... as though sharing a marketplace with the likes of Akon and Rihanna moves us half-a-centimetre away from our current utter obscurity and a corresponding half-a-centimetre closer to the glory that is the mainstream.
September 16, 2008: blind fingers ep: RELEASED
Today marks the OFFICIAL RELEASE of our 4 song, studio CD: "the blind fingers ep" !!! Go to the consume page to read all about it and - if you want - pick up a copy for yourself (and another one for your friend). We hope you love it.
August 12, 2008: recording complete for ep
Recording has finally wrapped on the blind fingers ep. The 4 songs, in running order are: Blind Fingers, Nuclear Winter, Paperback Raita and Blind Fingers [John Cougar-Mellencamp Mix]. The songs can all be heard on the media page. It's been a tortuous, but strangely satisfying process. All that remains now it to finalise artwork, press and ship the cds and they will be available for purchase online (from this site). We hope you have a chance to listen to the new tunes, and we hope you like 'em.
June 23, 2008: blind fingers ep: work commences
...see now that we're super professionals and have acquired ware (both soft and hard) that enables us to make multi-track recordings, we have commenced work on our first "proper" recording project: a 4 song ep. This will feature Blind Fingers, plus versions of other songs that are never likely to surface again, including a new Dylanesque/Billy-Braggesque composition named "Nuclear Winter". Once again we will be uploading the results to our mp3.com.au site, and burning cd's for any super super hip and underground folks that would like to own one. Click the graphic at the left to see what the art work looks like.
April 7, 2008: live recording
We were honoured to welcome James Sparkes into the salubrious environs of the Blue Room over the weekend whereupon James set up some extremely expensive microphones and impressive recording hardware and we set about making recordings of 7 songs - live to stereo. Of course, everyone behaved like consummate professionals, and the session went somewhat surprisingly smoothly. A reasonable version of each song was captured by, in most cases, about the second or third take. The session was recorded to DAT, so there will be a brief interlude while James bounces it to DVD and a wee bit of mastering is undertaken. P and S are keen to retain in the recordings, that honest rough edge of the live sound, while ending up with something at least reasonably listenable, so mastering will only involve getting the EQ and general song levels right. The songs recorded were: Fall in Love With Me, Juan Circled, Blind Fingers, Sequoia, Hiding Place, Wildlife Documentaries and TNK. No-one is exactly sure at this stage what will be done with the finished recordings, but it seems likely they are at least destined for uploading to somewhere like mp3.com.au |
